What began in the 1950s with a few quarries in the northern Spanish province of Gipuzkoa has grown into an impressive group of companies. Today, Calcinor is the leading lime producer in Spain and one of the most important producers of quicklime and its derivatives in Europe, and we are proud to be part of this success story.
Between 1973 and 1975, the Altzo plant was upgraded with three Maerz-PFR kilns to make the best use of the high quality limestone from the Altzo quarry.
The partnership between Maerz and the Calcinor Group deepened in 1985 when Dolomitas del Norte joined the group and we built the first Maerz Finelime® kiln at the Bueras site. On 29 January 2020, our partnership reached a new peak when Calcinor decided to build a state-of-the-art Maerz C2F Finelime® kiln in the same plant. This innovative kiln, which can run on both natural gas and solid fuel, is the first of its kind in Europe and represents the latest generation of our C-series.
In 2011, the Calcinor Group built its first kiln outside of Spain in a joint venture with Lafarge. The kiln was built in Tlata Louad, 100 km southeast of Casablanca in Morocco. Shortly thereafter, the first Maerz kiln for small limestone grain sizes on the African continent with an output of 300 tpd also went into operation at this plant.
On 26 October 2023, the Maerz C2F Finelime® Kiln was inaugurated during a festive ceremony. This project is further proof of the strong partnership between Maerz and the Calcinor Group, based on trust, innovation and the constant pursuit of excellence. Today, Calcinor operates an impressive 17 Maerz PFR kilns - a clear sign of the successful and long-standing cooperation between our companies.
With our expertise and willingness to move forward, we are shaping the future of the lime industry together with the Calcinor Group. We look forward to many more years of successful cooperation and to the future milestones that we will undoubtedly achieve together.
